Lere Robinson, a nutritional consultant, living well coach, and founder of Alive Again and The RAW TRUTH will lead a wellness morning on clean and lean eating on Saturday April, 23, 2016 from 8:30am-1:30pm.
This will be the 5th year of this event and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger because of Lere’s passion about helping people change their eating lifestyles so they can be healthy and happier.
This year’s theme is, “The Roots of Great Health” which zeroes in on the five avenues you can use – food, exercise, environment, protection, and mental attitude – to improve the overall quality of your life.
The morning will feature valuable door prizes, healthy snacks and refreshments, powerful health related testimonies, and a variety of popular vendor booths. There will also be two optional breakout lunch and learn sessions for those attending and we are proud to be offering the “lunch” part of those sessions which include:

On line with Lere:
Its April and we are welcoming the spring, the nice weather, outdoor activities, good times with friends and … vegan healthy homemade hot dogs. Yep these dogs are already barking and wagging their tails cause they are coming back to the cafe on Wednesday April 13th, 2016. At the other end of the leash? A match made in HOPven. Yes we are welcoming Freehouse Brewery from North Charleston who will be taking over all our taps for the evening to pet, scratch, and complement those dogs as well as tantalize your taste buds. HOPven? Freehouse Beers are USDA certified organic (by some local university called Clemson) or as Arthur Lucas, head brewer and owner says:
“Our beer is VEGAN, as well as organic and of course GMO free. We do not use fish bladders or anything outside the plant kingdom in our beer.“
Plant Kingdom too? Well that will really make those dogs happy 8:)
As you know for all tap take overs we take each beer and mix it into our food. The beer Freehouse Brewery will be tapping as well the descriptions from their website are:
Folly’s Pride : Crisp, quaffable and flavorful grapefruit blonde session ale. An American blonde with a mild bitter citrus finish. Like the beautiful beaches of the low country, this easy drinking brew keeps you coming again and again.
Ashley Farmhouse Saison : A dry Belgian-style saison. Hazy golden hue in the traditional farmhouse brewing style. Yeast-driven fruit and tartness with mild spiciness from the flaked rye and ginger in the background. Lightly hoppy with a slight bitter finish from the bitter orange peel. Easy drinking. Great for pairing with Lowcountry cuisine, especially seafood and fried foods. The Ashley Farmhouse reflects the tradition of rustic, farmhouse brewing that inspires Freehouse Brewery today, and is named for the Ashley River where the brewery is located.
Green Door IPA : Generous additions of organic American hops – citrusy, grassy, and herbal – combine with organic malts to strike a perfect balance with our house ale yeast. A crisp and fresh hop-flavored IPA. Open the Green Door.
Amber Farmhouse : Slightly darker and wilder sister of the Ashley Farmhouse. Light, fruity, easy drinking amber ale, brewed with a house blend of our Farmhouse, British, and local SC wild yeasts, as well as local lacto and traditional Brett Lambic. The perfect copper-colored saison for the warm days and cool evenings of spring. Moderately acidic with notes of mild cherry funk on the finish. *Enjoy the draft fresh this spring – bottles of the aged version will be released this fall*.
So we will be mixing the Green Door in our beer cheese and steaming the dogs with the customer favorite Ashley Farmhouse. We will leave it up to Sharon on whether she takes that mild cherry funk flavor from the amber and makes some sort of dark chocolate dessert or maybe she will do something with the grapefruit flavors from the blonde to make some sort of cream dream? What we do know is we’re looking forward to this match made in HOPven that won’t be totally complete unless you bring all your senses. Oh … one more sense to add for the evening! Matthew Dickerson the 2012 National Hammer Dulcimer Champion will be doing just that … hammering on the dulcimer. You got to be kidding … Freehouse Beer, Vegan Homemade Hotdogs, and a Dulcimer all in one evening. Check out Matthew here:
The Palmetto Latin Jazz band will be back to serenade you into doing the salsa whether you know how to or not. These guys are great and they provide an extremely fun evening for all whether you got the groove or not. Horns, Congas, Guitars, sometimes they are 5 members strong and other times they could be 6 or 7. No matter the number though, the beat can be heard up and down Main Street. We will be open an extra hour this evening so that your night can be complete and we will be serving Black Beans and Rice, Fried Plantains, and Salad to complement the evening. On top of that you can make the entire day a Latin Fest as Sharon will be leading an ALL RAW mexican class earlier in the day and you can find out more about the class by clicking here.

The bearded ones from Frothy Beard Brewery are a jealous group. They are moving in and taking over our taps on Wednesday, June 10th, 2015 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm for our first ever tap takeover at the cafe. We are excited as the kegs will only be spewing their Zingiber Pale Ale, A’ndale Pale Ale, Choconaut and the Sumter Street Amber. Michael Biondi one of the three owners and brewers will be present to answer all your hops and grains related questions between steins. And yes last time we checked he had not got caught up in all the razor shaving mail order biz that seems to be the new internet ad wave.
To get the body hoppin, we are excited to bring back Chris Compton as our special musical guest who will play from 7:00pm-9:00pm. Chris will bring his own songs to our cafe in an ALT folksy rawking way. K. Peterson from Free Times says this of Chris: “Compton is one of Columbia’s great, enigmatic singer-songwriters. In contrast to any number of conventional folk singers, Compton rarely relies on traditional structures or typical subject matter. Instead, melody-heavy guitar playing and a tendency toward unorthodox song structures prevail. Think Badly Drawn Boy and Harry Nilsson mixed with some indie rock band from the ’90s that you’ve never heard of.” You can find out more about Chris here.
WANT more? This is where it gets really exciting. We will incorporate those beers into our food! We will have some vegan beer cheese doused with the Jalapeno Cilantro Ale. We will make our own vegan hot dogs steamed with the Ginger Pale Ale and then smoked (under 100 degrees). Hot Dog choices will be:
- The Mexicana covered with salsa, guacalmole, cashew sour cream, and beer cheese
- The Chicagan covered with pickled cukes, peppers & onions, tomatoes, celery salt, & mustard
- The GLC Slaw layered with BBQ slaw, onions, beer cheese, and Sumter Amber Vegan Chili
Complements will be Thai Tater Tots covered in Cashew Sour Cream, Beer Cheese, and Sweet & Spicy Chili Sauce, Jicama “Potato” Salad, Kale, Fruit, BBQ Slaw
Then there will be a dessert infused with the Chocolate Oatmeal Stout.
Pints will be $4.00 and flights $8.00 all night long and during the five o’ clock shadow time of 5-6, food will be 10% off.
Looking forward to quaffing a stein with you, whether you have a beard or not!
These First Thursdays on Main are coming around faster than we can blink an eye and we are happy about that. This is the day for Columbia’s monthly art crawl and street fest that showcases the revitalized Main Street community with participation of many of the merchants from the Capital to Town Hall.
The Flat Out Strangers may need to change their name, because they are certainly no stranger to the cafe or to this first Thursday of the month street fest. Like healthy RAW food, their music brings out in all an energy level that just can not be explained. A four piece band of hobos crammed into the corner with dancers swinging where they can inside and out is an enviroment in Columbia, SC that would make New York City proud. Whether you can dance or not, you have got to come by and check out the grooves. You can find out more about our special musical guest by clicking here.
All of Main Street will be hopping in some way or another, so mark it down on your calendar and visit to see why Columbia, SC is famously hot. You can see what all the other Main Street Merchants have in store for you here.
See the dancers and Flat Out Strangers perform “Lady Be Good” from our May, 2015 Edition of first Thursdays on Main.
